Product #3671 Water-Based Conductive Epoxy Primer

A two-component, water-based, carbon-filled conductive epoxy primer for compatible electrostatic-dissipative and conductive resinous flooring systems.

Water-Based Epoxy 10 g/L VOC 1A:4B by Volume 8-10 Wet Mils Black Conductive Layer

General Description

Epoxy.com Product #3671 is a two-component, water-based conductive epoxy primer containing conductive carbon filler. It is designed to provide a continuous conductive layer beneath compatible ESD and conductive resinous flooring systems.

Product #3671 has low odor during application and cure, making it suitable for many interior installations, including occupied facilities where minimizing solvent odor is important. The cured primer is black and normally has a light orange-peel texture.

System Role

Product #3671 is a conductive system component, not a stand-alone finish coat. The concrete substrate must first be electrically isolated with a compatible non-conductive epoxy primer or basecoat before Product #3671 is applied.

Electrical isolation is required: Do not apply Product #3671 directly to bare concrete unless specifically approved as part of a complete system design.

Advantages

  • Conductive carbon-filled epoxy formulation
  • Water-based, low-odor application
  • Very low VOC content
  • Fast dry and recoat time
  • Provides a continuous conductive layer when properly applied
  • Designed for compatible ESD and conductive flooring systems
  • Black color helps visually confirm coverage
  • Water is used for the specified 10% application thinning

Typical Uses

  • Conductive resinous flooring systems
  • Electrostatic-dissipative flooring systems
  • Interior ESD flooring installations
  • Conductive primer layer beneath compatible system topcoats
  • Occupied facilities where low application odor is desirable

Final electrical performance depends on the complete flooring system, grounding design, film continuity, installation quality, and the requirements of the project specification.

These are typical published values, not guaranteed specifications. Temperature, humidity, ventilation, substrate condition, film thickness, and application method can affect working and cure times.

Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential to successful resinous flooring installation. The substrate must be sound and free of dirt, dust, wax, curing compounds, oil, grease, laitance, coatings, and other materials that may interfere with adhesion.

Concrete should be mechanically prepared as appropriate for the complete flooring system. Excessive substrate moisture must be evaluated and, where necessary, addressed with an appropriate moisture-vapor-control treatment before Product #3671 is used.

Application Conditions

  • Substrate temperature must be above 50°F for proper cure.
  • Relative humidity must be below 85% during application and cure.
  • Protect the surface from condensation, water, contamination, and traffic during cure.
  • Cool temperatures and high humidity can substantially extend dry and recoat times.

Mixing Instructions

  1. Premix Part B thoroughly before proportioning or combining with Part A. Conductive filler can settle during storage.
  2. Measure and combine 1 part Part A with 4 parts Part B by volume.
  3. Mix for approximately 2-3 minutes with a suitable mechanical mixer, scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing vessel.
  4. While continuing to mix, add 10% clean water by volume.
  5. Continue mixing for approximately 1 additional minute after the water has been added.
  6. Mix only the quantity that can be placed within the working life.
Published batch example: For 2.5 gallons of combined Part A and Part B, add approximately 32 fluid ounces of clean water. The resulting thinned volume is approximately 2.75 gallons.

Application

Apply mixed and thinned Product #3671 with a suitable roller, typically a 3/8-inch nap roller, at approximately 160-200 square feet per gallon. Maintain a uniform wet film thickness of approximately 8-10 mils.

Work the material evenly and avoid puddles, missed areas, roller ridges, or thin sections. The finished conductive layer should be continuous before application of the next system layer.

Critical film-thickness requirement: Do not apply Product #3671 at less than 8 wet mils. Insufficient film thickness can result in improper conductive readings.

Electrical Verification Before Recoat

After Product #3671 has dried and before applying the next conductive system layer, verify electrical resistance using the test method and acceptance criteria required for the flooring system.

Field check: Product #3671 must test below 10,000 ohms before recoating unless a different requirement has been specifically approved for the complete system.

If readings are outside the required range, do not cover the primer until film thickness, continuity, test procedure, grounding details, and other possible causes have been evaluated.

Limitations

  • Do not apply when substrate temperature is 50°F or below.
  • Do not apply when relative humidity is 85% or higher.
  • Do not apply at less than 8 wet mils.
  • Do not apply directly to bare concrete without an approved non-conductive isolating primer or basecoat.
  • Excessive substrate moisture may require a moisture-vapor-control treatment.
  • Electrical performance must be verified before the next system layer is applied.
  • Product #3671 is intended as a component of a compatible conductive or ESD flooring system, not as a stand-alone finish.

Cleanup and Safety

Remove uncured material from skin promptly using soap and water. Do not use strong solvents on skin.

Clean tools and equipment promptly before the material cures. Follow the current Product #3671 Safety Data Sheets for approved cleanup materials, personal protective equipment, ventilation, handling, storage, and disposal requirements.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store Product #3671 in unopened containers under suitable protected storage conditions. Protect water-based material from freezing and temperature extremes unless the current Safety Data Sheet or label specifically states otherwise.

Published shelf life is 6 months when properly stored in unopened containers.
